This October, Microsoft is to release their developer's version of Service Pack 1 (SP1) with planned public release in January 2008. Without knowing the changes and impact SP1 will have, we feel it is better to wait until Vista is more stable before we release the Power LogOn version. Online Holiday Shopping More Convenient & Secure Than Ever Before
You know that Power LogOn can automatically log you on to all your favorite online stores with a simple double-click, but did you know that it can also store address and credit card information for safe online shopping?
On the main Power LogOn screen just under the menu bar, are two tabs entitled "Address" and "Payment". By clicking on one of these tabs and then clicking the "New" button you can enter multiple addresses and multiple credit card information.
So how does this help make online shopping more convenient and secure? First, you no longer have to manually type in your personal information into the online order forms. By simply opening the Power LogOn address / payment tab you simply click and drag the requested information into the corresponding online fields, making form entry quick, easy and secure.
Next, you don't have to hunt for a credit card and try to read the card number while at the same time typing in the number. Additionally. by not typing this information in manually, you are protecting it from key loggers or other spyware software that may have found its way onto your computer. These types of malicious programs capture all keyboard entries and then forward them to the person who created the software. With the click and drag function in Power LogOn, there are no keyboard entries to be captured.
And lastly, your credit card information is not stored in your computer where others can access it. So don't forget to use Power LogOn for all of your online shopping transactions! |
ID Theft Protection for College Bound Students
College students are becoming increasingly vulnerable to identity theft due to common practices in which they unknowingly compromise their personal information. Here are a few pointers and suggestions that can help reduce their risks.
General ID Protection:
- Don't use your social security number as your student ID. In many states this is now illegal.
- While schools may want to do a criminal record search, don't put all your vital information on one slip of paper that can be lost or stolen. Send it to them in a separate envelope or give it to them over the phone.
- Limit the amount of personal information you disclose on a social network website.
- Purchase a confetti type paper shredder, and shred any and all documents that have any personal information you would not want a stranger to find.
Computer ID Protection:
- Password protect your personal computer. You don't want roommates using your computer to surf websites that can infect your computer with viruses, worms, and other malicious codes.
- Don't use the same password for your school accounts that you use for any banking or social networking accounts.
- Don't write any passwords on sticky notes, notebooks, PDAs, etc. that a roommate or visitor could find. A high percentage of victims actually do know the thief.
- Get all the anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, etc. software and keep them up-to-date.
- Use a firewall program or a router, and keep your operating system updated.
- Don't use a wireless router unless there is a secure connection.
- Don't have an Internet Browser store your passwords. Your passwords and accounts are also there for anyone else who has access to your computer.
Final Thoughts
You don't need to be paranoid about security. The general rule is that you want to make the task of someone getting your identity so time consuming and difficult, that you make them look somewhere else for easier prey. By following a few simple, common-sense practices, you will greatly reduce your odds of being violated by digital identity thieves. While we have outlined only a fraction of ways to protect and monitor your identity, you may want to get our FREE book "Online Identity Theft Protection For Dummies™ - Power LogOn edition" at our website: www.access-smart.com to learn more tips and tricks to keep you secure.
